This compacted self-extracting archive of a shareware program containing:
1. An analog clock
2. A text editor not limited to 32,000 character with full grep
3. A stopwatch with 3 timers and 15 alarms
4. A calculator with extended features
5. A calendar with links to a personal notification system
6. An alarm clock with prior warning and recurrent alarm facility
7. On-line help system
8. Compatibility with Macintoshes with system 6.05 and above,
including system 7, and will run on any screen depth (though note
that the analog clock will not show on depths > 8 bit). It has been
tested on PowerBooks, LC IIIs and Quadras. The application is set to
520K but will run in less in monochrome.
Please enjoy!

MHA QuickMail Forms Collection IV
26 March 1993
The attached collection of QuickMail forms is being released for the
enjoyment of QuickMail users everywhere. If you like these forms, PLEASE
LET ME KNOW! I can be reached in any of several ways.
If you've created a neat QuickMail form and would like it distributed,
please feel free to mail it to me; I'll add it to my next collection.
Please note that QuickMail is a trademark of CE Software, Inc. Also, some
of the enclosed forms may include trademarks or registered trademarks of CE
and other companies, and their use is intended only for personal enjoyment.
Feel free to distribute these forms as a set, along with this note, or
individually by mailing them to other QuickMail users. Please don't modify
them except for your own personal use. Please do send me some e-mail or a
postcard or get in touch some other way if you like these forms, so that
I'll know that I should continue putting together these collections.
The archive is a self-extracting StuffIt Deluxe 3.0 file. Given the choice
between using StuffIt 1.5.1 format (which everyone can decode using a wide
variety of free utilities) or a self-extracting archive of about the same
size (which everyone can decode with NO additional utility) I chose the
latter. Apologies if you disagree with my decision, but I could never have
kept everyone happy. :-) Instructions for installing the forms themselves
are provided in the Read Me file that's enclosed within the archive.
This collection includes the following QM forms:

Subject: [*] SchoolStat 1.0 - statistics app
Please note that I am not the author of this program. I am posting it for a
friend whose email address can be found below:
SchoolStat is a shareware program containing interactive statistical
software. It is designed primarily for schools (hence the name!),
especially teachers who wish to show how probability distributions
can be brought alive with Macintosh graphics. It goes much further
though, and has a spreadsheet, sorting, arithmetic and mathematical
transformations (including N scores), statistical tests including
descriptive statistics, confidence intervals, paired and independent
comparisons (parametric and non-parametric), correlations, linear
regression, contingency tables and more. It has a graphing facility
for scatterplots, histograms, boxplots, stem and leaf diagrams, and
pie charts. A log window keeps tally of your analyses. It accepts 30
columns by 1000 data points in each and will perform any of the
functions on your own data. It includes both static probability
tables (eg normal, inverse normal, t- and F-distribution, chi-square
distribution, and others) and active tables which will plot the
distributions and fill in the specified (by the user) probabilities
as visible areas under the actual curve. These are in real time and
have to be seen to be believed! A fully interactive help system is
available (modeless windows) at all times accessed from the Apple
menu (Command-/).
Please feel free to offer me suggestions, via my email, and if you
like and use it, please send me the shareware fee of $20. If there is
any interest I will add extra things and hone it into any shape
suggested. I could add ANOVA, multiple regression and others if there
is enough interest. SchoolStat(tm) should be considered a competitor for
MiniTab or StatView Student but with the friendly Mac interface and
without the price tag.
Compatibility: It is compatible with Macintoshes with system 6.05 and
above, including system 7, and will run on any screen depth. It runs
on SEs to PowerBooks, LC IIIs and Quadras. But note! It is large in
disc space (approx 900K) and needs 860K of RAM at present. This makes
it suitable for machines with 2MB RAM at minimum, though it will run
in 1MB RAM with a modified system lacking bells and whistles. It
should also run on a network.

Subject: [*] Screen Play 1.2 Submission
Attached is a small Stuffit Archive containing Screen Play 1.2.
Screen Play 1.2 is a startup screen randomizer. Several recent posts have
indicated that some folks are unable to use Jon Pugh's "Randomizer" due to
conflicts. I've used Screen Play for some time now, with no problems. It is
certainly compatible with System 7.0.1 Tuned, but we haven't yet upgraded
to 7.1 so I'm not sure of compatibility there.
I'm sorry all I have is the extension itself. I have no documentation.
According to the Get Info, Kevin Fong is the author, but there is no
address. (Kevin, if you read this, you might want to upload a complete
package, and please let me know if this was supposed to be shareware --
I've gotten so much pleasure from it I'll be happy to pay a reasonable
fee!)
The extension is very easy to use. Drop it onto your System Folder and
allow the Finder to put it into your "Extensions" folder. Create a folder
called "Screens" inside your System Folder, and place a collection of
startup screens (give them real names) inside the "Screens" folder. The
first time you restart with Screen Play active, it will copy one of the
screens from the folder, name it "StartupScreen" and save it in the System
Folder. Each time you restart, your current StartupScreen will be
displayed, and Screen Play will randomly select another one of the screens,
copy it, get rid of the old StartupScreen, and rename the new copy
StartupScreen. If you do a "Get Info" on the StartupScreen, you'll see the
title of the current screen file (the one you'll see next time you restart)
at the top, next to the icon, and you'll see the name of the *last* screen
file (the one you saw when you restarted this time) in the "Version" field.
Enjoy,
Jerry

SuperClock! 4.0.3 Control Panel Release Notes
I ended up rewriting a lot of SuperClock! for the 4.0 release in order to c=
lean
up some stuff, but also to add and remove some features. The following lis=
ts
the major changes, effects, etc. Note that bugs have and will creep in, gi=
ven
the number of changes. Let me know what you find.
[No repeat beep audio alarm feature. Sniff! --Larry Rymal]
Revision Changes:
=A5 4.0.3
- Fixed a bug that caused the Plus, SE, and Classic only to crash on
installation.
- Fixed a bug that could cause the clock to remain permanently hidden.
- Made a change in displaying the list of fonts to work around a
conflict with Suitcase II that was causing some of the fonts to be
ignored. This was affecting people using Japanese system software
(probably others as well) since they couldn't use kana/kanji fonts.=20
- SuperClock! should not stomp on the Timbuktu icon.
- Sped things up a bit.
- SpellFinder=AA for AppleLink=A8 causes the clock to be initially displa=
yed
in the wrong location on the menu bar. Clicking to another application
and back (forces the menu bar to be redrawn) puts the clock in the righ=
t
place. This will not be fixed.=20
=A5 4.0.2
- Fixed a bug that was causing non-color Macs (i.e., Plus, SE, Classic,
PowerBook 100) to crash on installation.
- Fixed an editing problem with the alarm time.
- Fixed a bug in the "chime same number of times..." option.
=A5 4.0.1
- Fixed a bug in 4.0 (thanks, everyone) that caused the control panel to =
crash
in 32-bit mode (no, actually this was not a "32-bit clean" issue).
Bug Fixes (4.0):
- The battery indicator (for portables) will no longer flash, and should no=
w
show the correct battery level on all PowerBooks. - The clock will keep
running while typing in Microsoft Word. In previous versions of
SuperClock!, the clock display would stop updating until you clicked the
mouse. This is actually a Word weirdness, but it was an easy thing to
fix. - For those of you running 3.9 (not 3.9.1) on a Mac II, IIx, IIcx, o=
r
SE/30, there was a bug that could cause SuperClock! to crash when it was
installing. This was fixed in 3.9.1 and is also fixed in 4.0.=20
New Features (4.0):
- The battery indicator (for portables) is now optionally displayed. Also,=
it
will display the battery level even when charging.
- Added the day of the week (optionally) to the time and date.
- The clock can now chime on the quarter hours (:15, :30, :45) as well as o=
n the
hour (you're welcome, Owen).
- All chimes now happen in the background so you won't have to wait for
potentially long sounds to finish.
- The old screen saver check has been replaced by a new Gestalt-based one
initiated by Berkeley Systems for After Dark (2.0u and later). It's also
used by Pyro!, and Darkside (if not now, soon). This may cause
SuperClock! to display the clock at inappropriate times with older screen
savers. I decided to follow this course because it's faster and more
accurate than the old check.
Removed Features (4.0):
- SuperClock! now always checks for a screen saver, so the option was remov=
ed.
- Support for Stepping Out II=AA's fixed menu bar has been removed. If thi=
s
turns out to be a bad thing, please verbally flog me.

ZipIt 1.1 by Tommy Brown.
ZipIt will compress and decompress files in the Zip archive format, even
those created on other platforms (even PKZip 2.0 for the PC). When you
Zip a file on the Mac, it will retain its Mac information, even when
moved across platforms.
This is the first Zip utility for the Mac that actually has a Mac
interface.
ZipIt is fully System 7-savvy and and even supports special AppleEvents
that will allow it to work with other applications.
This versions fixes bugs and adds many features, like full PKZip 2.04g
compatibility, selective linefeed stripping, and more.

Hello folks. I would like to know the cheapest price anyone has seen for
the Rocket 25Mhz version, either with or without FPU, and where I could
get in contact with the vendor and/or seller. I wouldn't mind buying it

for $500. If anyone has anymore information, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

I do know of an alternative, but they don't have an Email address, although

Does this also mean that these manufacturers will refuse upgrades to people

A friend of mine has just bought an LC III with 160MB hard disk. Everything

fine apart from the NOISE. It's almost as noisy as a PC! It's certainly very
far from the usual quiet hum of a smaller Apple HD. Is this normal? Is it a

Basically, I want to know whether this guy should return the Mac or just buy

Well, yes, things have improved amazingly for the ST platform
series. Hard drives are easy to install (I bought a SeaGate 296n mechanism
four years ago for mine---still works) and data transfers are very fast.
Buggy programs? Naw....those are features. It depends on what software
you buy, not only for the ST, but on any computer platform. I can
document many bugs that irk me while using SoundEdit Pro for the Mac, for
example. There is one error dialog box for that program that I simply
cannot exit out of unless I brute force out.
But, such objections about the ST, and probably for the Amiga are
not really the true problem and the reason I moved to the Mac. The ST
platform is a solid and fast 680xx-chipped machine. But the marketing for
the computer is just flat awful. And that kills the ST.
So, when I rave in my "bozo" fashion about wishing for a
such-n-such program or utility on the Mac, it is because I wish for a
similar version for the Mac that was on the ST, knowing that it would be
simply awesome.
Be patient with me. I know that I am NOT the only Atari STer on the
net
who has moved to the Mac and very happy with the decision to do so, but
wishing for simple, but beeping alarm clocks, fast slide programs,
built-in fast "README" text readers, and here's a new one: a software
screen refresh accelerator. GRIN!
And, oh yes, I was introduced to the Mac through the Atari ST.
About five years ago, I bought the Mac Plus emulator for the ST and for
all practical purposes, had a Plus with a 640 * 400 monochrome screen, and
one that was about 15% faster than the real thing. Compatibility problems
existed only with programs that deviated significantly from Apple's legal
programing model calls. The thing even read Mac 800k disks.
So, apologies for bringing all this up, but maybe it will explain
some bozoism on my part.

Hello everyone out there.
I've got the following problem: I own a Mac plus and I want to run an
application that appears to check for the presence of ColorQuickdraw.
Is there a patch somewhere wich makes it possible to have ColorQuickdraw on a
Mac Plus? I have no intentions on using colors (for that would be technically
impossible), I just want to run the application in black and white. I am
running
system 7.0.
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks,

Hello,
A few days ago, I asked the net to know how to convert AppleWorks files...
Many thanks to those who answer me.
The summay is : Get the files on the mac, either with an Apple //GS (using the
3 1/2 disk drive) and use Apple File Exchange, either by RS-232 connection.
Once you have the files, you can open it by ClarisWorks. Quite everybody told
me that ClarisWorks was the only program which can open AppleWorks files, but
somebody told me there exists a convertor for Microsoft Works.

Subject: FREE ALTERNATIVE TO QUICKKEYS (A)
Dear Netters:
Many people have recentally asked on the net how to create Macros without the
cost of QuickKeys. Here is one possible solution:
There is one non-recommended by Apple way to do this. MacroMaker 1.0.2 which
came with System (6.0.7) Additions Disk has the capability in System 7 to load
any Menu bar item, assuming the location of the menu item remains in a
constant location. This is true for every menu item except the Balloon Help.
Apple does not recommend the use of MacroMaker with System 7, though it is
mostly compatible.
Installation: 1. Put System (6.0.7) Additions disk in your disk drive
2. Open MacroMaker Folder from System Additions Disk
3. Open Hard Disk System Folder
4. Drag the contents of MacroMaker Folder into the open System
Folder.
5. If you have Extension Manager, be sure that MacroMaker is
highlighted.
6. Restart your machine.
Creating (Recording Macros): 1. Click on tape icon in your Menu Bar
2. Click on Open MacroMaker
3. You will notice the possibility of recording
Global/Finder/or Application/Desk Accessory
Macros. Global Macros work with every
application/desk accessory and finder
item except balloon help. Application/Desk
Accessory Macros work only to the specific
Application you record it for. Be sure these
macros don't conflict with global
macros, or command keys that are preassigned
to the application. i.e. Don't assign
command-c
as a new global macro as you won't be able to
do the copy command any more.
**** WARNING ***** 4. As recording a macro is equivalent to writing
a short computer program, be careful of
macros that are played, and end up in an
endless loop. I.e. macros that force you to
interrupt them. If they say interrupt, reboot
your machine. This bug is the only
incompatibility with System 7, it leads to
BusErrors and Type 2, 3 System errors. Thus
test run your global and application macros
on each application with its "Untitled" or
"Untitled-1" file shown to make sure it
completes its playing, before attempting to
do
another command. The playing will be
complete, when the highlighted Tape
icon reverts to no-highlighting like the
other menu bar items. This bug may
be why it was listed as unnecessary for
System 7 with the compatibility checker.
**** If you don't test run your macros, you run the
risk of losing your data, or corrupting your
files. Periodically the resource map of
MacroMaker goes bad, so keep a copy of the
Macros file backed up everytime you
record a new one.
5. Recording the Macro - keystrokes/ mouse
movements/ and mouse button pressing are all
recorded into the macro. This
means the mouse position when it is pressed
will be remembered when the macro
is recorded. If you record a Menu Bar Macro,
be sure when you click on the Menu Item it is
fully highlighted, and not flickering, or else
the mouse pressing won't be recorded.
When that is done return to
the tape menu, select the only darkened item.
6. Back in MacroMaker click in the command window
and select a command of your choice, assuming
it doesn't conflict with any previous
macro/command key, and give the macro a Name,
and finally, click the Store button in the
MacroMaker Window.
Please note that you can combine Caps Lock,
Shift, Option, Control, Command to make
thousands of possible combinations in creating
these macros. It also distinguishes Numeric
Keypad keys from the normal number and
arithmetic function keys on top of the main
body of the keyboard.
*******
Warning
*******
If you installed System 7 on your machine using the Easy Install, or custom
installation then the opperation of MacroMaker becomes impossible. Only the
full installation using the installler works, and I have only tested
MacroMaker on System 7.0.0.
I know it sounds like there are too many bugs, but it is FREE, and has goods
that well outweigh the bugs. I use MacroMaker to have command keys for
launching all my folders, applications, and cdevs straight from Apple Menu
aliases. Thus it is a free application launcher. All of the above is my past
experience of using MacroMaker with System 7.0.0 on a Mac LC I. Hope it works
as well on your Mac. Good Luck. If you have any questions, feel free to
ask.
However, I can't bin/hex or ftp the program to you.
Disclaimer: Apple doesn't recommend the use
of MacroMaker in System 7. Apple, MacroMaker, System Additions, may all be
trademarks of Apple Computer inc. The warnings above should be taken
seriously, as you could lose all your open files when running an endless
Macro.
Sincerely,

Subject: Help With Maps sought (Q)
Hello,
I have a whole bunch of telephone numbers of places that I call (about
250) and I was wondering if there was an electronic product (possibly on a cd
or lots and lots of floppies :-)) that would look at these numbers` area codes
and prefixes and then place virtual 'pins` or flags on the area on a world
and/or North American map..... if there are many numbers to a particular area,
then a flag of a different color would be placed there-- possibly building a
"topograhic" map of sorts...
Would anyone out there be able to tell me of such a thing?

Subject: Hypercard and EtherTalk conflict followup
To add a bit more to my previous post: I tried installing Apple's EtherTalk
software rather than Farallon's. Exactly the same problem. What I did
discover was that if I open the MacTCP control panel and switch to LocalTalk,
upon reboot, the HyperCard will work fine (the message box accepts commands),
but no macTCP connections through EtherTalk. And if I open the control panel
and switch back, then HyperCard bombs as before while EtherTalk is fine.
So now it seems like Apple's two pieces of software are conflicting with
each other. This is interesting, isn't it?
Frustratedly,
Steve

Subject: Hypercard and Farallon EtherCard conflict
I've discovered through a fair amount of detective work that I'm
experiencing a conflict between Hypercard 2.1 and the EtherMac software
used to run my Farallon IIsi Ethernet card. HyperCard works fine, until
I try to use the Message Box. At that point, everything I type into is
rejected.
Without going into the route I went in laborious detail, suffice to say
that reinstalling the system solved the hypercard problem, but I was unable
to use my ethernet connection. I reinstalled the ethernet software, and
immediately was unable to use HyperCard as I outlined above. I did this
twice and determined this was the problem. It's not extensions, etc, it's the
resources (?) that the Farallon Installer puts in.
Has anyone else found this? Had any success getting a company to support them
when such a problem occurs?
Thanks for any info, and to anyone who sent suggestions before..

delete line x of field "whatever"
Sometimes things are simple, eh? If you need to search a current field for
empty lines you can do something like the following:
on mouseUp
repeat with lineCount = (the number of lines in card field "test") down to 1
if line lineCount of card field "test" is empty then
delete line lineCount of card field "test"
end if
end repeat
end mouseUp
The reason you count down is so that deleting the lines doesn't foul up your
count. There is probably a faster method to do this using offset, but I
didn't have time to play with it.

I: is there a way to "map" the Apple Keyboard II, or any keyboard for

similar to the (gasp!) IBM tinykeyboard layout--and although I can

functionality to all programs that can take advantage of it. It doesn't
look so simple as hacking System's 'kchr' and I looked at functionkeys
(the init which will do this and also emulate F1-15, it just didn't
float my boat, not quite what I was looking for.
II. Does there exist some beast that will allow me to mount disk images
created by Norton Floppier? It is a handy utility and since I paid for
it, I'd like to be able to use it..Especially since it can outdo Disk
Duplicator by copying only occupied sectors. (come to think of it, it
would be a pain to write to an image file and have to dynamically resize
it to add sectors, but even mounting as read-only would be usefull for
restoring backups).

Y'all may recall my question of last month about M/O drives. The I-M
experts alleviated the fears generated by the MacUser article, and I've
been thinking real seriously about one of those puppies ever since. As
you may have noticed, prices vary widely. I was tempted by the sub-$K
prices in (1) a few no-name outfits who advertise in MacWeek and (2) the
MacWarehouse poweruser product. But I'm not all that happy with the TEAC
poweruser tape I got from MW, and I'm not real brave when it comes to
outfits I've never heard of. And the sub-$K drives seemed to all be the
slower 45ms TEAC mechanism instead of the 35ms Epson.
Among the reputable outfits, APS seemed the best: a drive for $1199 and
a ten-pack of disks at $40 each. OK, I'll spend an extra $200 for peace
of mind. I called. The price of the APS external 128 M/O is now $999. I
of course insisted on my right to pay $1199 for it. Sure I did. I have
not seen the toy yet, but I thought some of you price-conscious types
might like to know that at least one of the good vendors is down to the
price of house brands and no-names. The original APS selling points seem
to be the same: Epson mechanism, special cooling, excellent brand.
Just watch. The price will be down to $475 next week.

I've recently noticed something on my SE/30. First, here are my stats:
- Mac SE/30 with 20 Meg Real RAM (not virtual)
- 3 hard drives at 40 meg (internal), 105 meg and 88 meg SyQuest
- Mode 32 On
- System 7.0.1*
- Built in monitor in addition to a 14" NEC monitor with a Micron
Xceed Card
When booting up, I've discovered that I can run out of memory while
the inits are loading. No, not the whole 20 megs, which is why things
are strange.
I have a lot of inits and all seem to work well together. Unless... I
increase the amount of memory used by an init. For example, increasing
the number of sounds or sound sizes used by a Sound Manager type program.
Or if I increase my Disk Cache control panel.
I figured all this by increasing my cache by a large amount (from 256K per
volume to 2 meg per volume). At the last init (Mac EKG) the system crashed.
I changed the cache back to 256K and everything worked. Then I slowly
increased the cache by 256K increments and at one point, control panels
started popping up windows when loading saying something like "Out of
System Memory." One step further, and the same control panel would crash.
To make sure it wasn't just the cache control panel, I put that back to 256K
and increased the number of sounds used and the same type of crash happened.
If I keep the cache high and turn off everything else, it works. As I
slowly add more things, I get over a certain threshold and find I've run out
of memory again.
Just a note: I never had it set up to use more than 14 meg of my 20 meg RAM.
What's wrong; how can I fix this; why does this happen?
Any help would be appreciated.

MusicWorks was a commercial product from MacroMind; it was definitely
not shareware. Unfortunately, it was discontinued years ago. It will
only run on an old Mac: 128, 512, Plus, SE.
MacroMind did indeed become today's MacroMedia. With all the turnover

This is bad news about the 3201 mechanism, but it doesn't tell the whole
story about Toshiba-based CD-ROM drives. Some owners of Toshiba and CD
Technology drives _will_ be able to upgrade to Photo CD capability. Page 12
of the March 22 issue of Mac Week contains a news brief saying that Toshiba
has released a new version of their driver software that will give
single-session Photo CD capability to its TXM3301 mechanism. The new
driver, version 1.5.2, is available for $15, or free for users who bought
their drives in the past 90 days. In addition, there is a ROM upgrade that
will give multi-session capability. The ROM upgrade and the new driver
together cost $99. Call Toshiba at 714-583-3129.
My CD Porta-Drive, bought in mid-1992, has the 3301 mechanism, so I called
CD Technology customer service at 408-752-8500 and asked about Photo CD. CD
Technology customers can buy the new driver from CD Technology, or send
their drives to Toshiba for the same $99 ROM/driver upgrade.
So even though Toshiba appears to have abandoned the pioneering 3201
owners, they have provided an upgrade path for 3301 owners. CD Porta-Drive
owners can find out which mechanism they have by running SCSI Probe.

To my knowledge virtual sex is not even available yet (possible?),
and you people are already talking about regulating it. What's more
absurd is that you are making these statements without ever having
tried virtual sex. Thoughts of "No, I haven't read the _Satanic_Verses_,
but I still think it should be banned" come to mind. Sound familiar?
You wrote: "In fact, we are
creating the perfect device to transform people into sex-obsessed

These devices could cause serious mental and sociological
problems."
What evidence do you have to support this believe?

I had the same problem with Word 5.1a. Conditions: System 7.1, Laserwriter
IIg,
font palatino. justification right and left. The right edge became jagged
when I use a word that was bold and italic. I was finally able to fix the
problem by taking all palantino truetype fonts out of my system folder.
I called microsoft about the problem and they were no help.

Subject: Which Modem to choose? (A)
In IM-68 Chris Montague asks which modem to choose.
Well this is my experience with a Practical Peripherals 14400FXSA
modem and the staff there at PP. I originally responded last year with this
blurb. I'll try to make this as short as possible while still not omitting
some key details as to why they pissed me off so bad.
The modem was purchased in July 1992 for approx 425$. Thought it was a good
price. At the time of purchase, the FAX software for the MAC was not
available (only for PC). So I waited around without fax capabilities for
about 4 months until they said some FAX SW was available. I asked them to
send it to me (for 25$). When I got the SW, a note saying "we have decided
to provide you with a complementary copy of Quicklink II/fax (version1.2.1)"
was in the box. A week later I got my visa bill and sure enough, they
charge me for it. I'm not one to snibble and I blew it off assuming it was
a mistake. I JUST WANTED TO GET THE MODEM TO WORK WITH THE SW.
After several attempts to send/receive faxes, I determined that you could
receive OK but sending was another matter. All of the send faxes were
reduced in size 30% to 60% (yes I have tried every setting). So I call tech
support (4 times). The first three times the guy comes on the phone saying
"I don't know anything about Macs and no one here right now that knows them
either". When I asked to leave a message for someone to call me back he
informed me "the Mac guy is really busy and I don't think he'll have time to
call you".
After repeated attempts, I finally talked to a manager named Mark who told
me to talk to Dan. Dan informed me that he had no problems on a IIsi (as is
my machine) but he didn't have 32bit and VM on. After turning these on his
machine crashed. In the mean time he sent me an EPROM version 1.15M to
replace my older one. Being an EE and having no choice, I swapped out the
EPROM easily. Didn't help. I called Dan a week later and he said he
finally got the machine running in 32bit mode but ==> HE TOO EXPERIENCED THE
SAME PROBLEMS I DID with the shrinking FAX. I asked him if he told
development about it and he said NO, "they were kind-of busy".
Well after all of this, the thing still doesn't work and I've bitched so
loud that they've decided to refund my money.
My warning........ DO NOT BUY PRACTICAL PERIPHERALS modems for use with a
MAC. They seem to work OK on PCs but not on Macs ! The staff doesn't seem
to give a crap either that they have a bad product !!#&*@%@#
As to which modem you might consider, Global Village has some very nice
products which are consistently ranked very high by the Mags. I would try
to stay away from PowerUser type brands which are simply someones OEM
out-of-date hardware in a different package. Stick with compaies whose sole
business is in communications and modems. Usually cost slightly more but in
the long run you'll be glad you did. One exception is when talking about a
company which deals with PC exclusively and then trys to get into the Mac
market (such as Practical Periphs).

Subject: Windows and Mac together
Hello,
I'm looking for tools wich would allow me to let PC (Windows) and Mac
to share the same SQL database. This is quite simple.
It will be more difficult to find those tools because I really need
another feature : I want to write code once. Ok for compiling
twice (one time for Mac another for Windows). I'd like the two
worlds to share the same code.
Any suggestions, experiences are welcome

I've been reading with some alarm the recent stories of Powerbook owners who
wind up with phenominal repair bills for breakage due to 'alleged misuse'.
One PB 170 owner who found a crack in the lower corner of his screen took it
to an Appple shop where the technician examined it and, with no visible signs
of external damage, determined the crack was caused by 'misuse'. The repair
bill was nearly $1400. And AppleCare DIDN'T cover it.
It's one thing if the case is banged up and/or cracked but Apple is clearly
engaged in some badwill dealing. If the PBs are that sensitive then Apple
needs to come right out and say that the PBs are NOT portable and should not
be moved unnecessarily. Apple also needs to define clearly (before purchase)
what constitutes 'misuse/abuse'.
Unfortunately, I feel that these types of problems will increase with the Duo
models as their construction, especially screen assemblies, don't feel as
solid as the PB models.
By the way, you folks who bought those super discount PB 100s should consider
them as 'disposables'. If your screen goes, the repair bill will exceed the
cost of the PB itself.
The only immediate solution I can offer is to see if you can get an 'all risk'
insurance policy from your insurance company. Most homeowner policies can have
this rider attached for a small cost.
